⚡ Quick Answer
Renew at least 30 days before expiry on the FoSCoS portal. Late renewal attracts a penalty of ₹100 per day. Operating with an expired FSSAI license is illegal and can result in fines up to ₹5 lakh. Renewal fee is same as original: ₹100–₹7,500/year.
FSSAI licenses and registrations are valid for 1 to 5 years depending on the period chosen at the time of original application. You must apply for renewal before the expiry date — ideally 30 days in advance — to ensure uninterrupted operations.
60 Days Before Expiry
✅ Best Time to Apply
No penalty. Renewal processed smoothly. Your current license remains valid during processing.
30 Days Before Expiry
⚠️ Last Safe Window
FSSAI guidelines require applications at least 30 days before expiry. Apply immediately if you are in this window.
After Expiry Date
🔴 Late Renewal — Penalty Applies
₹100 per day penalty from expiry date. Cannot operate legally. Must stop food business until renewed.
30+ Days After Expiry
🔴 Fresh Registration Required
If significantly lapsed, FSSAI may require a completely fresh application rather than renewal, adding cost and time.
⚠️ Set a reminder! FSSAI does NOT send automatic expiry reminders. Add the expiry date to your calendar and set a reminder 60 days before. Check your license certificate for the exact expiry date.
Renewal Fees
FSSAI renewal fees are identical to the original application fees. You can renew for 1–5 years at a time. Choosing a longer renewal period reduces administrative hassle.

Step-by-Step Renewal Process
Log in to FoSCoS Portal
Visit foscos.fssai.gov.in and log in with your registered mobile number or email.
Go to "Renewal" Section
Under "My Licenses/Registrations", find your license and click on "Apply for Renewal". The system will display your current license details.
Review and Update Business Details
Verify all existing information — business name, address, food categories, owner details. Update anything that has changed.
Select Renewal Period
Choose 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 years for the renewed license. The system will calculate the fee automatically.
Upload Supporting Documents
Upload the same documents as original application. If any documents have changed (e.g. new address, new partners), upload updated versions.
Pay Renewal Fee
Pay online via UPI, net banking, or debit/credit card. Keep the payment receipt for records.
Track Status and Download Certificate
Basic Registration renewals are approved within 7–10 days. State and Central license renewals may involve inspection and take 30–60 days. Download the renewed certificate once approved.
Documents Required for Renewal
Renewal documents are largely the same as the original application. Additional documents may be required if there have been any changes to your business.
For Basic Registration Renewal:
Current FSSAI registration certificate (copy)
Photo ID proof of the proprietor
Address proof of business premises (if changed)
For State / Central License Renewal:
Current FSSAI license certificate
Updated list of food products (if product range has changed)
Updated layout plan (if premises have changed)
Annual turnover declaration or CA certificate
Renewed business registration documents (if expired)
Updated NOC from local authority (for State License)
Penalties for Late or No Renewal
FSSAI takes license compliance seriously. The penalty structure for non-renewal is designed to deter businesses from operating without a valid certificate.
Violation
Penalty
Late renewal (after expiry date)
₹100 per day from date of expiry
Operating with expired license
Fine up to ₹5 lakh + seizure of products
Failure to renew State/Central License
Cancellation of license, may require fresh application
Selling food under an expired FSSAI number
Criminal prosecution under FSS Act 2006
Platform listing (Swiggy, Zomato) with expired FSSAI
Immediate delisting from the platform
🚨 Critical: If your FSSAI license is expired and you continue operating, each day counts as a separate violation. A 30-day lapse with daily ₹100 fine = ₹3,000 in penalties alone — plus risk of seizure and criminal action.
What To Do If Your FSSAI Has Already Expired
Do not panic — but act immediately. Here is what to do depending on how long ago it expired:
Expired less than 30 days ago:
Log into FoSCoS immediately and apply for late renewal
Pay the applicable penalty (₹100 × number of days expired)
Provide a reason for the delay in the renewal application
Do not continue food operations until renewal is confirmed
Expired more than 30 days ago:
Contact FSSAI / your state food authority for guidance — a fresh application may be required
Fresh applications restart the processing clock (7–90 days depending on type)
All late penalties must be cleared before new license is issued
You may need to submit a fresh inspection for State/Central License

Modifying Details During Renewal
Renewal is also a good opportunity to update your FSSAI details if anything has changed in your business. The following modifications can be made during renewal:
New food products: Adding new product categories (e.g. adding beverages to your existing bakery license)
Change of address: If your business has moved premises
Change in capacity: If your production capacity has increased significantly
Change in ownership/partners: If there has been a change in business ownership
Upgrade license type: If your turnover has grown from Basic Registration to State License range, renewal is the right time to upgrade
⚠️ Do not wait for renewal to update your FSSAI. If your business details change significantly mid-license (e.g. new products, new address), you are legally required to inform FSSAI within 30 days by filing a modification application.
