What is GST Registration?

GST Registrationis the process by which a business obtains a unique 15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) from the Government of India. It allows you to legally collect GST from customers and claim Input Tax Credit on your business purchases.

Introduced on 1st July 2017, the Goods and Services Tax unified India's complex multi-layered indirect tax system — replacing VAT, Service Tax, Excise Duty and 13 other taxes — into a single, streamlined system.

A business that crosses the prescribed turnover threshold becomes legally obligated to register. Once registered, the business gets a GSTIN — a 15-character alphanumeric identifier — which it must display on invoices, letterheads, and business documents.

Without GST registration, a business cannot legally issue GST invoices, collect tax from buyers, or claim Input Tax Credit — making it effectively invisible in B2B supply chains.

Benefits of GST Registration

GST registration isn't just a legal checkbox. It unlocks tangible business advantages that directly affect your growth and competitiveness.

💸

Claim Input Tax Credit

Reduce your tax burden by claiming credit on GST paid on purchases, rent, utilities and services. This can significantly lower your effective tax rate.

🏢

Sell to Corporate Buyers

Most registered businesses prefer GST-registered vendors. Without a GSTIN, you're invisible to the B2B market — especially large enterprises and government.

🌍

Export Goods & Services

GST registration is mandatory for exporters. It allows you to file under LUT (Letter of Undertaking) and claim refund of IGST paid on exports.

📊

E-commerce Marketplace Access

Sell on Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho and other marketplaces. All online platforms require a GSTIN before onboarding a seller.

🏦

Easier Business Loans

GST returns serve as proof of revenue for banks and NBFCs. Registered businesses find it significantly easier to access business credit and working capital.

⚖️

Legal Business Recognition

A GSTIN is a nationally recognised business identifier. It adds legitimacy in government tenders, vendor empanelments, and business contracts.

📱

Composition Scheme Option

Eligible small businesses can pay GST at a flat reduced rate (1–6%) under the Composition Scheme, reducing compliance burden significantly.

🔄

Seamless Input Chain

Be part of the formal economy's input-output chain. Your buyers can claim ITC on purchases from you, making your products more competitively priced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about GST registration — answered in plain language by our expert CAs.

Who needs to register for GST in India?
+
Any business with annual aggregate turnover exceeding ₹40 lakhs (goods) or ₹20 lakhs (services) must register for GST. Additionally, e-commerce sellers, inter-state suppliers, exporters, and businesses under reverse charge must register regardless of turnover.See the full eligibility table above →
How long does GST registration take?
+
Standard processing takes 3–7 working days after successful application filing. At ClearlyComply, we target 3–5 days with our expedited process. If the GST officer raises any queries, we handle them — which may extend the timeline by 1–2 additional days.
Is there any government fee for GST registration?
+
GST registration on the government portal (gst.gov.in) isfree of charge. ClearlyComply's fee of ₹999 covers our professional service: document verification, application preparation, filing, and follow-up with the GST officer. There are zero hidden or additional government fees.
Can I do GST registration myself without a CA?
+
Yes, you can self-register on gst.gov.in. However, common mistakes — wrong HSN/SAC code selection, incorrect business classification, wrong document type — frequently result in application rejection or a show cause notice. A professional ensures first-time accuracy. For ₹999, it's rarely worth the risk of doing it alone.
What documents are required for GST registration?
+
Documents vary by business type. For sole proprietors: PAN, Aadhaar, address proof, bank details, and a photograph. For companies: Company PAN, Certificate of Incorporation, MOA/AOA, directors' details, and registered office proof.See the full checklist by business type above →
What is the penalty for not registering under GST?
+
If you fail to register when legally required, the penalty is10% of the tax due, subject to a minimum of ₹10,000. In cases of deliberate evasion, the penalty is 100% of the tax amount. In addition, you may face interest charges at 18% per annum on unpaid tax.
Is a GSTIN permanent? Can it be cancelled?
+
Yes, a GSTIN is permanent once issued — unless it is voluntarily surrendered, cancelled by a tax officer for non-compliance, or suspended. If your business closes or turnover falls below the threshold, you can apply for GST cancellation. ClearlyComply also handlesGST cancellation →
Do I need separate GST registration for multiple states?
+
Yes. GST operates on a state-by-state basis. Each state where you have a place of business or warehouse requires a separate registration. ClearlyComply's Premium plan covers up to 3 state registrations. For 4+ states, contact us for a custom bundle quote.
What is the Composition Scheme and should I opt in?
+
The Composition Scheme allows small businesses (turnover below ₹1.5 crore for goods, ₹50 lakhs for services) to pay GST at a flat rate of 1–6% instead of the standard rates. It significantly reduces compliance — quarterly returns instead of monthly. However, composition dealers cannot issue taxable invoices or claim ITC. Our CAs can advise on whether it's right for you during the free consultation.
Can I register for GST before reaching the turnover threshold?
+
Absolutely. Voluntary GST registration is allowed and often recommended. If you're selling to GST-registered businesses (B2B), having a GSTIN lets your buyers claim ITC — making you a more competitive supplier. It also makes bank loan applications easier and opens up e-commerce platforms.
