Import Export Code (IEC) registration from DGFT — mandatory for all importers and exporters.
All services include expert assistance, document review and government filing. Starting ₹499.
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is the primary business identification number for any entity engaged in importing goods into India or exporting goods from India. Without a valid IEC, customs authorities cannot process your shipments and banks cannot process international trade payments.
The IEC is based on the entity's PAN and is allotted at the entity level — a single IEC covers all branches, factories, and units of the same entity. The government fee for a new IEC is ₹500, payable on the DGFT portal. Once issued, the IEC has lifetime validity and requires only an annual confirmation update on the DGFT portal (no annual fee).
IEC is also required to avail export incentives under schemes such as Advance Authorisation, EPCG (Export Promotion Capital Goods), and Duty Drawback. E-commerce exporters shipping via courier need IEC for customs documentation. Service exporters receiving foreign remittances find IEC essential for smooth bank processing and SEIS benefits.
Any individual or business entity importing goods into or exporting goods and services from India requires an IEC.
Manufacturers and traders exporting goods via sea, air, or land customs ports must quote their IEC on all shipping bills and customs declarations.
Any entity importing raw materials, finished goods, machinery, or any other items into India must hold a valid IEC for customs clearance and bill of entry filing.
Sellers exporting products through Amazon Global, Shopify, eBay, or other international platforms via courier need IEC for customs documentation under the E-Commerce Export Scheme.
IT companies, consulting firms, and BPOs receiving foreign remittances find IEC necessary for SEIS benefits, FIRC processing, and foreign currency account management.
Merchant exporters and trading houses that do not manufacture but buy from manufacturers and export require IEC to execute trade transactions and obtain export incentives.
Small farmers, food processors, and MSME product exporters exporting spices, textiles, handicrafts, or agri-products need IEC to avail of APEDA, MPEDA, and other export promotion board schemes.
